- This will be the 3rd time in 5 seasons that the Gills will have faced Colchester, all in this competition. In all competitions, both sides have won 29 meetings with a further 26 ended in draws.
- Since November 2005, the Gills have only beaten Colchester 3 times in 15 meetings however those wins have come in the most recent 6 games played between the sides.
- Since winning all 3 group games in the 2017/18 season, the Gills have since only managed 1 win in the 3 or 4 games played in this competition in each of the last 3 seasons.
- Just 4 of the last 12 games in the Football League trophy have been away and each saw the Gills fail to score: 0-2 (Cambridge), 0-2 (Ipswich), 0-4 (Ipswich) and 0-4 (Portsmouth). The away game prior to those was a 1-0 in 2017/18 at..........Colchester.

(20.35) A Colchester attack looked like opening the scoring but shoots wide when seemingly easier to score. The shot grazed the outside of the post.

(20.52) After managing no corners, no shots on target and no shots off target in the first half, the Gills have 2 good shots saved, a shot which goes just wide and win a corner all in a 2 minute spell between the 62nd and 64th minutes.

(20.59) Colchester go down to 10 men after an injury forces Beadle off after all subs had been made.

(20.02) Kelman steals the ball and heads for goal. Reeves steals the ball of his team mate and shoots wide.

(21.13) Kelman sends a fierce header at goal which requires a flying save to tip over before he sees another header go just wide.
